There was a time when consumers didn't expect much from luxury automakers in terms of fuel efficiency. For a while it was something left to the non-luxury brands, but the tides have turned considerably over the course of the last ten years and now BMW actually manufactures some of the most efficient automobiles in the industry, including three of them that were featured in this summer's "10 Most Fuel-Efficient Luxury Cars of 2015" list over at Kelley Blue Book.
It's not a particularly scientific list, as it just looks at projected MPG and MPGe numbers among all luxury automobiles, but even with those simple criteria it certainly was nice to see almost a third of the models listed be under the BMW umbrella, including the top vehicle overall and two of the top five.
Those two, not surprisingly, were the 2015 BMW i8 and the 2015 BMW i3, both of which offer truly elite efficiency numbers without sacrificing anything in terms of luxury, comfort and safety. In the case of the i8, which manages approximately 76 MPGe on the first 15 miles of its range, performance also is elite, as the hybrid supercar can rip from 0-60 mph in a scant 4.2 seconds despite its hybrid drivetrain.
The i3 was the top vehicle on the list for the second year in a row, however, thanks to its 81-mile range and 124 MPGe combined efficiency numbers, and for what it's worth, the BMW 3 Series also made the list thanks to the 2015 BMW 328d and its efficient 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel engine
All three of these cars offer plenty by way of luxury and creature comforts, but it's their efficiency earning them recognition from KBB.com this time around. We're very happy that the expectations for fuel efficiency in luxury vehicles have changed!
