If you want to know about baseball, you talk to Peter Gammons. If you want to know about food, you talk to Alton Brown. And if you want to know about the infinite nature of space and time, you talk to Stephen Hawking. Experts are experts, and we here at Fields BMW Lakeland aren't in the business of challenging them when they something of substance. So when Popular Mechanics, the know-all publication for everything mechanical and technological, calls our new i-Series concepts one of the Top 10 Plug-In Cars for 2012 and Beyond, we've got no choice but to respect that designation.
These i-Series vehicles, which include the compact i3 and the sporty-yet-efficient i8 coupe, are only concepts at the moment, but by the end of 2013 or the beginning part of 2014, these will have some of their concept kitsch stripped away for production and will actually be available for purchase.
What makes them so great, though? Well, the i3 is completely electric, designed mostly for urban driving, and it should be able to go 85-100 miles on a single charge. It's also got a respectable amount of torque for an EV that small.
The i8, meanwhile, is more of a plug-in hybrid, and it balances performance and efficiency better than most of the cars we've ever seen. Not only should it get upwards of 56 mpg, but it's also got quite a bit of power. And man, does it ever look cool.
Anyone who drives a BMW in Florida is going to be looking at trading in somewhere around late '13 when these cars hit our lots. They're certainly buzz-worthy; even the experts say so.
