BMW Looks to Deep Learning to Keep Drivers Safe

As automakers like BMW look at ways to shift more of the responsibility of driving onto the cars themselves, the issue of safety becomes ever more prevalent. And whenever self-driving cars do arrive, they’ll be sharing the road with cars still driven the “old-fashioned way,” by drivers like those who come into Fields BMW Lakeland.

BMW has long been a company focused on breaking new ground, and in this area, they’re looking to continue that trend. That’s why, through BMW i Ventures, they’ve invested with other automakers in Nauto, a small start-up company doing big things. Namely, the company outfits vehicles in urban centers across the globe with in-vehicle cameras and sensors. This equipment communicates with a smart network and a continuous learning cloud, gathering data on driver behavior and driving patterns.

Ulrich Quay, Head of BMW i Ventures, is excited about working with Nauto, saying “We were impressed by Nauto’s comprehensive approach to improving urban mobility and are excited to be part of further developing its future. Our relationship with Nauto and its team will accelerate what we are doing with deep learning systems and inform ways we can serve as a guardian for human drivers during a period of technology-driven change in transportation and mobility overall.”

Through its current data collection efforts in 24 cities, Nauto is gaining insights on the behavior of excellent drivers, as well as on the factors that contribute to crashes. Going forward, the company is looking to integrate their software directly into new production vehicles, and by doing so, gather data not only on driving patterns and behaviors, but road conditions and other factors outside of the car.
